🗜️ How does image compression actually reduce file size?
JPG and WebP shrink files by discarding color and detail information the eye barely notices (lossy compression). Lower quality means a smaller file but more visible loss, so 70–80% quality is usually the sweet spot between size and appearance. Shrinking the pixel dimensions as well reduces file size even further.
📊 Target file size by use case
- Blog/website body images — Keep each under 200–500KB for faster page loads.
- Email attachments — Aim for under 1MB per image given typical inbox limits.
- Online form uploads — Limits like "under 300KB" are common. Enter your target KB in the "Target size" tab.
- Social media uploads — Platforms re-compress anyway, so a moderate size beats preserving original quality.
💾 Why does saving as JPG shrink the file more?
If your photo doesn't need a transparent background, saving as JPG or WebP instead of PNG is much better for file size. PNG is lossless, so photos saved as PNG tend to be large. Use Convert alongside this if you need to change format.
🧭 Which compression method should I pick
There are three methods — the right choice depends on your goal.
| Method | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Quality slider | When you want to balance quality vs size yourself — 70–80% works well for most photos |
| Target size (KB) | When a submission form or email attachment has a hard size limit |
| Max dimension | When the photo resolution is larger than needed — this reduces size the most |

💬 Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I set a target file size?
- Yes. Enter a KB value in the "Target size" tab and it automatically compresses to stay at or under that size.
- How much does quality drop?
- You control it with the quality slider. 70–80% typically shrinks file size significantly with no visible loss.
- Does it compress transparent PNGs too?
- Yes. PNG, JPG, WebP, and HEIC are all supported, and shrinking the max dimension alongside compression reduces size even further.
- Can an already-compressed photo shrink further?
- Re-compressing a lossy file at the same quality helps little and can degrade the image. Lowering the target size or reducing dimensions works better.
- Does the original image change?
- No. The compressed result downloads as a new file — your original stays untouched.
